The Embedded Sensing Group (ESG) is part of the Institute of Computer Science Vorarlberg (ICV-HSG) at the University of St. Gallen (HSG). Sensors are a major interface translating the physical into the digital world. The mission is to establish excellent research in embedded sensors and their communication, addressing application trade-offs involving performance, efficiency, and security requirements. Together with other groups at the School of Computer Science (SCS-HSG), ESG offers a full and up-to-date curriculum on embedded sensors and their communication to undergraduate and graduate students.
Tasks
- Design and conduct research in the field of embedded sensors and constrained sensor networks
- Link scientific findings with industry-specific applications
- Support the group in knowledge transfer with industry in applied projects
- Engage in teaching at HSG, including courses and supervision of masters' and bachelors' theses
- Collaborate with other researchers in interdisciplinary projects
- Help the group in organizing workshops, seminars, and conferences
- Engage in outreach activities to promote research and increase the lab's visibility
- Participate in grant writing and proposal development activities
Requirements
- University-level master's degree in computer science
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
- Independent, structured way of working, and ability to independently manage time to meet deadlines
- Enjoy hands-on work and prototyping with real-world devices and sensors
- Good knowledge of programming languages C/C++ and Python
- Knowledge of Linux-based and Real-time Operating Systems (RTOS)
- Networking knowledge
- Desirable: previous publications in journals or conferences (ACM/IEEE)
- Desirable: good command of German language
- Desirable: knowledge in programming hardware boards (MCUs)
- Desirable: knowledge of low-level interfaces (I2C, SPI, UART, BLE)
- Desirable: experience with protocols for constrained networks (LoRa, CoAP, Zigbee, MQTT)
