The project is funded by the SNSF and the DFG in the framework of the CSCS research unit. In grass leaves, stomatal rows always form next to leaf veins, suggesting that this spatial coordination is important for water supply and demand. Yet how the development of veins and stomata is spatially coordinated remains an open question. Building on a single-cell atlas of grass leaf development from the first phase of this research unit, this project will use spatial genomics, imaging, genetics and biochemistry to uncover how these two tissues communicate to place stomatal rows robustly next to the leaf veins.

Tasks

  • Conduct research using spatial genomics, imaging, genetics and biochemistry to study vein-stomatal signalling in grass leaf development.
  • Build on a single-cell atlas of grass leaf development from the first phase of the research unit.
  • Investigate how veins and stomata communicate to coordinate their spatial development in grass leaves.

Benefits

  • Vibrant and inclusive research environment that strives to answer fundamental questions in plant development and physiology of grasses and succulents.
  • State-of-the-art research infrastructure at the Institute of Plant Sciences in Bern, Switzerland.
  • Affiliation with the Microscope Imaging Centre and the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research.
