For the Computing Systems Laboratory, Huawei is hiring Postdoctoral Researchers for an optimization-related high-performance computing platform. Over the next 1-2 years, the focus is on solving foundational scientific problems in high performance distributed- and shared-memory parallel optimization, aiming for publications in top scientific magazines. The platform is designed to address industrial optimization problems either on-premises or as-a-Service. The project initially runs for one year, with continuation depending on project outcomes.

Tasks

  • Re-platforming the physics by porting the solver core to the AI stack, including differentiable-programming frameworks, batched multipole algebra on accelerator fleets, and mixed precision with certified error control.
  • Building better methodology, addressing open problems such as inverse design in the space of physically admissible scattering operators, safeguarding approximate forward models against optimizers, statistical yield-aware design, and scalable design-space representations.
  • Driving publications on certified-efficiency frameworks, fabrication-constrained multipole bounds, objective-integrity methodology, and the re-platforming process.
  • Owning the lab-validation path, including design, fabrication partner, measurement protocol, and maintaining a closed sim-to-lab loop.
  • Managing commercial conversations related to certified, manufacturable design capabilities and selecting the first transfer target to prove method efficiency.

Requirements

  • Fluent in multipole/scattering theory, adjoint methods, and the inverse-design literature.
  • Experience moving scientific workloads onto accelerators or differentiable frameworks, with knowledge of precision, reduction order, and conservation laws.
  • Strong skills in both C++ and scientific Python.
  • Comfortable directing agentic AI research workflows.
  • Balanced temperament, valuing clean theorems, hardware measurements, and kernel speedups.
  • PhD in physics, applied mathematics, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related technical field (or MSc with equivalent research experience).
  • Solid numerical linear algebra skills, including BLAS/LAPACK ecosystems (MKL, cuBLAS/cuSOLVER or equivalent), dense and sparse factorizations, SVD/eigensolvers, conditioning and error analysis, mixed-precision arithmetic.
  • HPC experience: MPI and OpenMP, SLURM-managed clusters, performance engineering and profiling (e.g., Nsight, VTune, roofline analysis), vectorization.
  • AI-stack proficiency: PyTorch and/or JAX; custom accelerator kernels (CUDA, Triton) a plus.
  • Scientific software engineering discipline: modern C++ and Python, version control, CI, and regression/golden testing of numerical code.
  • Publication record in computational physics, photonics, numerical methods, or a related area.
  • Desirable: experience with computational electromagnetics tools (FDTD, RCWA, FEM), nanofabrication literacy (EBL/RIE process constraints), and ML surrogates for physical operators.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • Participation in innovative projects that make a difference.
  • Access to state-of-the-art technology and tools.
