The Decision Sciences and Analytics group at ETH Zürich, led by Prof. Tu Ni, is seeking a doctoral student to study the design and analysis of human-AI systems. The position focuses on developing AI systems with an emphasis on understanding and reshaping the role of humans, with applications in areas such as clinical or legal decisions, and learning and education. The research is mainly theoretical but may involve empirical studies like field or lab experiments when necessary.

Tasks

  • Analyze AI systems where decisions are often high-stake or have long-term impact
  • Design AI systems that lead to efficient and reliable outcomes
  • Write high-quality papers and publish in top-tier OM journals
  • Work with external organizations to evaluate methods if needed
  • Contribute to lab responsibilities, such as teaching and advising master theses

Requirements

  • Hold (or will have completed at the time of appointment) a Master’s degree in applied mathematics, economics, operations, or a closely related field
  • Excellent academic records and motivation to produce high-quality, policy-relevant research
  • Excellent analytical and modeling skills, such as optimization and mechanism design
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Industrial experience in AI deployment is a plus
